A recollection from the past

A recollection from the past may hit you at any time. When you least expect it, being unprepared, or by instigation.

A recollection from the past can be a trigger, of thoughts, emotions, imagery, music. Sometimes we try to force ourselves into a different frame of mind. But it could be, given the right moment, it’s way better to run with it. Let it flow.

Forcing the freedom of your intellect, what some may confuse with discipline, can also restrict your intellect’s freedom. To explore, to improvise, attempts to bridge the unobvious. Rail or derail you from your perceived train of thoughts. The human mind is a complex, multi-dimensional instrument. Whether for the positive or the negative.

A recollection: thoughtful man on a mountain

Our brain is largely unexplored. Much like the universe. In some respects we’ve come farther in gazing into the (perceived) history of our universe, than we have in getting into the depths of our own mind. We have achieved this exploration and by that also looked back in time.

But this is NOT what I intended to write about.

A recollection from the past

I had actually planned to do something (else) this morning other than ranting in a blog post. Something else, or nothing at all. But then a music professor who’s Yotube channel I subscribe to, popped up in the tube-feed. He had published an analysis of Emerson Lake & Palmer’s album Trilogy.

It brought me back in time instantly. To my first encounter, or listen, to the album. Must have been late 1972 or maybe early -73. I remember the place, but not the time. Also remember I thought, well this is shockingly good.

Anyhow, the music professor, unlike me, began with the beginning. Then we came to what some consider to be Emerson Lake & Palmer’s greatest hits. A downbeat guitar based song by bassist, guitarist and vocalist Greg Lake (RIP).

That make recollection even more vivid. So I decided to share it. The music, the song, is utterly timeless. Like so many pieces from a time and era, when artists made full albums, and listeners spent an entire afternoon listening to them.

Think I’m going to have an ELP weekend, “From the beginning”.

Lyrics: “From the beginning”

[Verse 1]
There might have been things I missed
But don’t be unkind
It don’t mean I’m blind

Perhaps there’s a thing or two
I think of, lying in bed
I shouldn’t have said
But there it is

[Chorus]
You see it’s all clear
You were meant to be here
From the beginning

[Verse 2]
Maybe I might’ve changed
And not been so cruel
Not been such a fool

Whatever was done is done
I just can’t recall
It doesn’t matter at all

[Chorus]
You see it’s all clear
You were meant to be here
From the beginning
